| TSAVO
EAST NATIONAL PARK - 11,747SQ KM
Tsavo East is one of Kenya's largest and oldest national parks: covering approximately 40 per cent of the total areas of all of Kenya's National Parks. It's dramatic views; in particular of the Mudanda Rock and the Yatta Plateau, the world's largest lava flow, and proximity to the coast make it a popular safari destination. Grassland and open plains alternate with semi-arid acacia scrub and woodlands. Green swathes cross the park where the riverbanks rise to lush vegetation; North of Galana is a true wilderness. Two permanent rivers water the park: the Tsavo River that flows through Tsavo West and the Athi River, which flows from Tsavo East; the two unite to form the remarkably shaped water-worn rocks (Lugard Falls). Game includes: elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, buffalo, cheetah, crocodile, giraffe, waterbuck, kudu, gerenuk, zebra and Hunter's Hartebeest. The Park is home to some of the largest herds of elephant in Kenya. Some 500-bird species have been recorded in the area, including ostrich and some migratory kestrels, while buzzards stop at Tsavo East during their long flight south. SAFARI IN TSAVO For those looking for the ultimate safari experience, a 9-seater safari vehicle is available for guests who wish to enter Tsavo East and West National Parks. The lodge can arrange morning and afternoon game drives into the parks; guided walks are led by a Professional Safari Guide and accompanied by a Ranger. Other activities including bush breakfasts, sundowners and visits to Voi Town can be organised with prior notice. |
